With this arrangement there are two parts to the system, the indoor and the outdoor unit. The two items are joined by refrigeration pipes and cables, rather on the same lines as a radiator piped to a boiler. The indoor unit recirculates air and the outdoor unit provides refrigerant through the pipes to enable the indoor unit to cool the air. The split systems are generally quieter than a mobile system as the refrigeration compressor is outside of the room. Whilst a split system is more expensive than a mobile unit, in situations where two mobiles would be required to cool an area, a single split system of twice the cooling duty may be a more cost effective solution. The internal section of a split system is smaller than a mobile unit and can be wall mounted at high level, low level, on or within a ceiling or even outside of the room and ducted.
